What is Nephrology?
Nephrology is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of kidney-related conditions and disorders. Nephrologists are physicians who specialize in the care of patients with kidney diseases, including acute and chronic kidney diseases, kidney stones, electrolyte disorders, hypertension (high blood pressure), and fluid and electrolyte imbalances.
How Kidneys function
Nephrologists have expertise in understanding the structure and function of the kidneys, which play a crucial role in maintaining overall health. The kidneys filter waste products and excess fluids from the blood, regulate electrolyte balance, control blood pressure, and produce hormones that help regulate red blood cell production and bone health.
Diagnosis
Nephrologists diagnose kidney diseases through a combination of patient history, physical examination, laboratory tests (including blood tests and urine tests), imaging studies (such as ultrasound, CT scans, and MRI), and kidney biopsy. Early detection and accurate diagnosis are essential for initiating timely treatment and preventing disease progression.
Treatments
Nephrologists develop individualized treatment plans for patients with kidney diseases based on the underlying cause, severity of the condition, and the patient’s overall health status. Treatment modalities may include medication therapy to control blood pressure, manage electrolyte imbalances, reduce proteinuria (protein in the urine), and slow the progression of kidney disease. In advanced cases, nephrologists may recommend dialysis or kidney transplantation to replace lost kidney function.
